Earth Day 2017 Countdown

History of Earth Day

Over 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, initiated Earth Day as a way for people to take action to help counteract the many environmental problems in the U.S. He realized that many small acts can make a world of difference.

Today people in over 190 countries celebrate Earth Day every year. Explore Earth Day's history through videos, photos and newspapers from the time at the website Gaylord Nelson and Earth Day.
